About Me

As a newcomer to town in 1951 at age 14 to get to know the neighborhood kids my age. I was invited to the local Pentecostal Tabernacle for Sunday services. The only free time I had since I worked after school weekdays and weekends with Sunday off. Since I had previously attended an Anglican church and boarded in a girls Catholic Convent as well as being an Alter boy in both churches. I felt comfortable with religious people. Like most I just went along with the boring and ranting sermons and rituals for something to do since everyone else I knew thought it was the thing to do. Then one day an American, hell fire and brimstone preacher. Came and branded me as a 'subversive Communist' and 'disciple of the devil.' for simply refusing to participate in begging forgiveness of my sins. For the life of me I could not think of any sins that I had committed. I always help people out who I thought could use my help, if able. I contributed to my widowed mother's household income. etc, plus did my share and more of chores. So it did eventually backfire on them, because it instilled in me a quest to find out what really constituted Communism/Socialism. I was about 20 years old when business men were clamoring for me to join their various parties that I finally decided on an intense scientific study to learn just exactly what its all about. Here I am. A convinced Socialist, some 42 years after joining the Socialist Party of Canada in '68 as a member of the World Socialist Movement.

I didn't mean to finish there. I'm not used to this site.

I will continue. I studied the SPGB case over thirty years ago and tried to join, but they voted 12 against and only one in favour. Steve Coleman said it wasn't that they disagreed with me, they simply didn't understand me.

I continued getting the Socialist Standard and I think I understand their point of view as well as they do. I essentially agree with their point of view as far as it goes, it simply doesn't go far enough. It stops short of the sort of implementation that is required for success.

Take propaganda. Propaganda is seen as words imparted to everyone through sites like this one. Problem, such words do not turn people into socialists. Nor does capitalism. Something else is needed. Action. Words are not action. Writing them is a very narrow type of action and reading them is a kind of action, but it does not directly contribute to putting food in bellies, clothes on backs, roofs over heads etc.

It is my point of view that when we start doing those things collectively we'll start to change minds. The problem is that "socialists" (Marxists) will not work with money in the way required to make collective efforts viable. So they are stuck. They want influence but will not do what is required to obtain it. If you want to influence a worker to become a socialist you need to create employment for that worker. Otherwise he/she will continue thinking the only work relationship possible is to either work for a capitalist company or to become a capitalist. We need to show that groups of workers can co-operate internally without money, externally with money.

Do you see my point? We will continue after your reply, but anyone else can jump in...

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bill,

Your response is the standard sort of response that I would expect from any member of the WSM.
